  1. Personal Photos

 

Taking down your pictures is one of the first and most effective ways to depersonalize your home. You want your home to be a blank canvas on which potential buyers can imagine their life, but they can’t very well do that if your family pictures are on the wall where theirs would be. Take this as an opportunity to prepack them for when you actually move. 

 

  1. Personal Collections 

If you have any personal collections of any sort, these should also be put away. I know you’re very proud of your ceramic owl figurines, but they should be packed away because they don’t allow potential buyers to imagine their collection of little frog statues on the mantle. 

 

  1. Trophies, Plaques, and Awards 

 

While your awards and trophies mean a lot to you, they are just clutter to the average buyer. It’s best if we pack away most of these and get them ready to be set up in your new home. There can be a few exceptions to this rule. For example, if your house is located near a beautiful golf course and you have golf trophies, one or two of these might be left out to subliminally remind your buyers of the golf course nearby. Otherwise, wrap them up and store them until you’re in your new home. 

 

  1. Paint Colors

 

Accent colors can be a great way to stylize your home, but when it comes time to move, you’re going to want to neutralize a lot of what you did to make the home special. That means painting any bright accent walls in more neutral colors that will appear to the widest audience possible. You may love your red walls, but it’s likely several prospective buyers won’t. 

 

  1. Political Symbols 

 

Politics is a divisive subject and makes just about everyone a little uncomfortable, and no matter where you live there is always going to be a mix of views. It doesn’t matter how right you feel you are, if you want your home to appeal to a wide net of buyers one of the best marketing moves you can make is removing any political symbols from view. Our ultimate goal is to sell your house, and I can guarantee you won’t be convincing anyone to change their mind by having that campaign mug on display or that party flag on the wall. Just pack those things away neatly and use them to bring some passion and personality to your next home.
