Interior Design Trends to Look Out For This Year 

 

As we launch into the new year, many of us are probably thinking about ways we can refresh our space to make us feel like we’re getting a fresh start on the new year. Here is a quick look at just a few of the interior design trends we’re seeing crop up in 2022. 

 

Cottagecore 

 

Cottagecore as a whole has existed since around 2020, but really picked up steam in 2021, especially on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This style is an idealization of country living. It celebrates home-based activities such as gardening, sewing, crafting, baking etc. The goal is to make the space feel cozy and lived in. It incorporates useful decorations and statement pieces. Think of a more modernized version of Hobbiton.

 

Sustainable Decor

 

As we become more aware of how our waste affects the environment, we are seeing an increase in sustainability and upcycling in modern home decor. This includes people switching to reusable water bottles like Hydroflasks and S’well bottles that can be both handy and decorative on their shelves. People are using thrifted or vintage furniture and often buying older items to spruce up and customize to their space. 

 

Nature-based Tones 



It’s no shock that people began to turn to nature for comfort during a pandemic when being in tight spaces with people is strictly prohibited. This is being reflected in interior design recently, with earthy tones, beautiful blues and forest greens coming to the forefront of paint picks and furniture choices. We’re also seeing bright statement colors that reflect nature as well, including brighter peaches and pinks that we see in flowers in the spring. 

 

Statement Rugs 

 

Speaking of statement pieces, we are seeing a rise in statement rugs as well. This can be anything from a simple two-tone rug in brighter colors to vintage rugs with beautifully complex designs that one hopes to stand and stare at for a little while. This can be an excellent way to introduce warmth and color into a room without relying on the walls or furniture. 

 

Sculptural Furniture 

 

This is no new trend, but it continues to rage on through the early 20’s. Simple and shapely chairs, couches, and accent pieces like side tables and stools are all the rage. They provide a visual break from the complexities of life and offer a soothing sight to the eye in any room. Choosing cool or deep soothing tones also add to the cozy effect these pieces bring.
